Do I need to delete/remove unsubscribes?

No, you don't need to remove or delete contacts that have unsubscribed. Unsubscribed users will remain in your list, but will be coded as Unsubscribed, meaning they no longer receive emails.

If you desire to remove unsubscribed users, you can, but we do not recommend it

How do I unsubscribe/delete/mark as bounced multiple contacts at once?

If you have multiple contacts in your databases that you want to Delete or mark as Unsubscribe or Bounced all at once, there's a few steps you'll need to take.

If you have a large number of contacts, you may want to manually create a text or CSV file containing the email addresses for each database that you want to Unsubscribe, mark as Bounced or Delete the contacts' email addresses from. The file should only contain one contact email address per row (Fig 1).

Fig 1

As an alternative to manually creating the list of unsubscribes/bounces/deletes, you can create a segment of those contacts and export it to a csv file (only export the Email Address field).

If you are migrating from another ESP to Pinpointe, you should be able to export a list of your current contacts from the old ESP that will usually include some sort of "Status" field that will denote the status of each email address, such as "Active", "Opt-out", "Bounce", etc.

WARNING: Your list must be email addresses ONLY! DO NOT include any other fields or columns. In addition, unlike when importing a list of contacts when populating your Pinpointe database, the first row of your Bulk Remove/Unsubscribe csv file should be the first email address you wish to delete or unsubscribe. The first row should NOT be a column name such as "Email Address".

To Remove, Unsubscribe or mark Contacts as Bounced:

In the left navigation menu, select Contacts -> Bulk Remove (Fig 2)

Fig 2

On the Remove Contacts screen, select the Contact Database that contains the contacts you want to permanently delete, unsubscribe or mark as bounced, and click the "Next" button (Fig 3).

Fig 3

Now we'll be able to choose which Contacts to Remove in one of the following ways:

  • Manually type the email addresses of contacts into a text box
  • Upload the csv file you manually created that contains the list of email addresses (preferred method for larger lists)

Next, choose what you want to do For the Contacts above and click "Next"(Fig 4):

  • Mark them as unsubscribed in my database
  • Remove them from my database permanently
  • Mark them as bounced
Fig 4

If you choose "Remove them from my database permanently", you will be prompted to make sure you actually want to do this (Fig 5).

Fig 5

After the process is complete, the applied changes will be applied to your selected database (Fig 6).

Repeat this process for all databases from which you want to Delete, Unsubscribe or Bounce contacts.

If a recipient is in multiple lists and they click 'unsubscribe,' which list are they unsubscribed from?

When a subscriber hits the unsubscribe button on an email, they will be taken to an "Subscription Preferences" page (Fig 15).

Fig 15

From this page, a subscriber can selects the list(s) they want to unsubscribe from, be removed from future emails, or pause subscriptions for 90 days. After clicking the "Update Subscription" button, the changes will take place.

Note: If Unsubscribe me from all future emails checkbox is selected, the user will not receive any emails from Pinpointe in the future even if you add them to a new list.

Customizing Your Default Unsubscribe Form

Unsubscribe Links

Pinpointe gives you a couple of different options as far as how you go about providing your contacts the ability to unsubscribe from your marketing emails.  To remain in compliance with all applicable email privacy laws (ECPA, CAN-SPAM), Pinpointe requires that you must provide a means by which your email recipients can opt out of receiving future emails from you, either in part or in whole.

The easiest way to achieve this is to include the Pinpointe provided "Unsubscribe" link within the body of your email template, whether you are using the Drag & Drop Builder or WYSIWYG Editor to construct your emails. The examples that follow are from the perspective of the Drag & Drop Builder since that is the more commonly used tool of the two.

All of the Builder's pre-made email templates already contain the "Unsubscribe" link. In addition, two of the Footer Basic Blocks contain the "Unsubscribe" link by default. The example below was constructed using such a block (Fig 16).

Unsubscribe Form

When your email's recipient clicks the "Unsubscribe" link, a form is brought up in another browser tab (Fig 17).

These forms have many configurable areas including the following:

  • Header
  • Email address
  • Associated database the recipient belongs to
  • Option to unsubscribe from ALL future mailing
  • Option to pause the subscription
  • Button colors

Editing the Default Unsubscribe Form

To edit the Default Unsubscribe form, on the Navigation Menu on the left, click Resources -> Custom Unsubscribe (Fig 18).

Fig 18

On the Custom Unsubscribe page, you can make a lot of changes (Fig 19):

Fig 19

  • Customize Form Language: The default is English.
  • Customize Page Operation: Limit the Unsubscribe options recipients will see.

    • Show Only Unsubscribe from All: We recommend you do not use this option. If users select this, they will be unsubscribed from all lists and databases. This is an "all-or-nothing choice".

    • Display Databases: This lets recipients either unsubscribe from all or unsubscribe from the database this email campaign was sent to.

    • Display Lists (Customize): This lets recipients either unsubscribe from all or unsubscribe from lists which offers more specificity than unsubscribing from a database.
  • Customize Color: Change the color of the buttons on the Unsubscribe Page
  • Customize Header

    • Display an image/logo: Display an image or logo as the header to the Unsubscribe Page; you'll need to click on Upload Image to add your image.

    • Display text: Display text in the header.

    • No header: Display no header.
  • Custom HTMLCustomize surrounding HTML and CSS of the Unsubscribe Page.
  • Save/Preview/Reset/Cancel: Save changes to the Unsubscribe Page, Preview changes, Reset changes to default setting, or Cancel (don't save) changes.

Once you have modified the form to your liking, you may click the "Preview" button to review it, then click "Save" to make your alterations permanent (Fig 20). You may also reset the form back to its default parameters by clicking "Reset".
